Dead in 5 | RawRadioX Band of the Week

Dead in 5 | Detroit Rock

When Detroit rockers Dead in 5 planned their CD release party for Saturday May 4th at The Token Lounge, the group was confident their six song debut EP would be finished in plenty of time for the celebration. But just short of their manufacturing deadline, the band’s producer, Andy Patalan (owner of The Loft Studios in Saline and guitarist for Platinum hit-makers Sponge), gave them a call. “Something wasn’t right,” explains Dead in 5 guitarist Brent Hall. Patalan informed the anxious group that there was a technical glitch – and in order to get the sound perfect – there would have to be some re-recording.

“It’s not what we wanted to hear – but we were grateful that Andy cared enough to get it right,” adds guitarist Peder Seglund.

So with a few tracks redone the disc will be ready for release – but unfortunately not in time for Dead in 5’s official release party on May 4. To appease fans – the band will be giving away one single from forthcoming disc to everyone who attends. “And we’ll be throwing a hell of a party anyway!” affirms Dead in 5 lead singer Robert Libres.

Joined by a potent line up of hard rock bands that includes Crackjaw, Mindrought, Spork, and Downriver Zero, the party will also feature a Lucky Monkey Tattoo giveaway, tarot card readings, a “six-way” birthday party, and in a nod to Cinco De Mayo – a skull piñata and ice luge! Raw Radio X’s Rikki Roxx will also act as MC.

While Dead in 5’s debut CD won’t be available at the show – fans will be able to buy band T-shirts, and lead singer Robert Libres’ infamous homemade hot sauces “Demon’s Blood” and “Face Melter.”

Dead in 5 anticipates their CD will be ready in time for the band’s upcoming shows at The Blind Pig (Ann Arbor) on May 10 and Churchill’s (Flint) on May 11.

Outlaw rockers Dead in 5 includes former members of three-time Detroit Music Award winners for “Outstanding Hard Rock Group” 60 Second Crush and acclaimed metal outfit Mansfield Park. The 5-piece original rock act evokes a hemi-powered mash up of Clutch, Soundgarden and Rob Zombie. It’s a rock and roll juggernaut guaranteed to get fists pumping.

RawRadioX Bands of the Week | Cybertrybe and Haflife

RawRadioX Bands of the Week | Cybertrybe and Haflife

Industrial rock band Cybertrybe will perform as part of the Detroit Music Awards on Friday, April 19 at The Fillmore (2115 Woodward Avenue), Detroit. Cybertrybe – along with genre compatriots Haflife and Draconian Productions – will team up for a spirited tribute to Detroit’s Industrial and Goth music scenes. Tickets to the Detroit Music Awards are $20 and now available at the Fillmore Box Office or by calling 313-961-5451. Doors are at 6 pm and show time is at 7 pm. All ages are welcome to attend.

When Detroit Music Award organizers invited Cybertrybe to perform at this year’s event – an honor reserved for a select few – bandleader Sean Mooer decided to pay tribute to the city’s hallowed, and often misunderstood, Industrial and Goth music scenes.

“The Detroit Goth and Industrial scene is not just a bunch of kids dressed in all black going to The City Club (Detroit’s long running Goth nightclub),” Mooer explains. “It is a community of bands, artist and special performers that take great pride in the art they represent.” Seeking to showcase this underground community – Mooer invited Cybertrybe’s industrial contemporaries Haflife and Draconian Productions, a theatrical troop that incorporates fire, aerial performance and dance, to share the stage with them.

Cybertrybe’s Detroit Music Awards performance is especially meaningful since they are nominated for seven awards this year including “Outstanding Electronic/Dance Artist/Group,” “Outstanding Electronic/Dance Recording,” “Outstanding Electronic/Dance Writer/Producer,” “Outstanding Local Label,” “Outstanding Rock/Pop Recording,” “Outstanding Rock Song Writer” and “Outstanding Industrial Group.” No stranger to accolades – Cybertrybe has been nominated for Detroit Music Awards every year since the band’s inception in 1994, garnering seven awards in the band’s almost 20 years together.

Cybertrybe is currently finishing their latest release “Picnic in the Apocalypse” (EvilFish Records) slated for a Fall 2013 release. Having performed with rock luminaries Nine Inch Nails, Stone Temple Pilots and Powerman 5000, music fans are in for a treat with Cybertrybe’s invigorating live show at the Detroit Music Awards on Friday, April 19.

The Royal Blackbirds | RawRadioX Band of the Week

The Royal Blackbirds | RawRadioX Band of the Week

Biography
Founded in 2008 by the help of Ray Charles impersonator, Tyrone Hamilton, the Royal Blackbirds (formally Hair of the Dog) are a working blues rock band from Eastside Detroit. However, with the term “blues rock group,” images come to mind of old codgers in hole in the wall taverns playing for tips and nostalgia. Fortunate for their viewers, the median age of this band is 20, and instead of recycling the classics for the millionth time, the Royal Blackbirds refurbish the bluesy lowdown sound the Detroiter work ethic embodies with tube amps, hollow bodies, thunderous drums and blistering bass. So if you want background noise, hire someone else. If you want a band to keep the audience bopping heads and shaking down, the Royal Blackbirds fit the ticket.

Rebecca Saad, vocalist and lead guitarist has been playing in bars since she was 13. Currently a music major at Macomb Community College, Rebecca, 22, took after guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughan, in which she spent a whole year, 6 hours a day, deciphering the blues master’s technique. His style is her musical cornerstone. Built off of this, Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy page added a songwriting perspective and creative zing to Rebecca most prevalent in her playing. From bow solos to Mach 1 rundowns, Rebecca is a prominent front woman any sane man would fear.

Nettie, drummer, 22, is Rebecca’s rhythmic twin. Jamming together since they were 15, when Nettie wasn’t being Rebecca’s roadie, she was practicing the drums and is completely self taught. Over the years, these two sat as a ticking time bomb waiting for the time and place to play music for a living.

In 2008, this opportunity was granted, and both played with Tyrone Hamilton for the city of Westland. But Tyrone had a surprise riding with him to the gig. This surprise was Dennis Burck, a classically trained bassist at the Berkley Music Center. Dennis, 19, took lessons with Bettye Lavette’s bassist, Chuck Bartels, for 7 years until he too went to play his first gig in Westland.

Once the three played for the first time, each knew this band was thee band. Four years later, the Royal Blackbirds are grinding higher and higher up the musical totem headlining local bars and clubs. So quit reading, give us a listen, and support a local band.

Jeremy Porter and The Tucos | RawRadioX Band of the Week | Week 1

Jeremy Porter and The Tucos Celebrate Record Release on March 29th with The Ryan Dilaha Band and Oak Bones Join Party at New Dodge Lounge

Twang soaked Americana rockers Jeremy Porter and The Tucos celebrate the release of their new record Partner in Crime at Hamtramck’s New Dodge Lounge on Friday, March 29. Doors are at 9 pm and cover is just $5. Ages 18 and over are welcome to attend. Adding to the festivities will be Detroit-tinged honky tonk by The Ryan Dilaha Band and Oak Bones.

Partner In Crime is the first full-length record by Jeremy Porter and The Tucos, and is now available on limited edition vinyl, CD and download via Detroit’s New Fortune Records. The disc was recorded at The Loft Studios in Saline, Michigan, with acclaimed producers Andy and Tim Patalan helming the project.

The twelve-song CD “ is full of lost love, regret, heartache and a little bit of desperation,” explains Porter. “I think that the best art comes from pain and emotional trauma.”

But music fans can expect plenty of fun at the band’s record release party. “My roots are in punk rock so the live shows tend to be more upbeat, faster and rowdier than you might expect,” adds Porter.

The band’s record release party also kicks off a Midwest tour with shows slated in Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Kalamazoo.

Don’t miss a great night of rock and twang from Jeremy Porter and The Tucos at the New Dodge Lounge on March 29!
